Effective Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

A Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis Doesn’t Have to Mean Decline

When I was first diagnosed with RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis), the doctors told me to expect decline. They said they would try to slow the disease process and keep me as comfortable as possible, for as long as they could. Unfortunately for me, I believed them. That is the traditional position in western medicine and rheumatology. It doesn’t have to be that way!

We can reverse our symptoms and we can heal. It doesn’t matter if it is a new diagnosis or decades into decline. If we identify and address the root causes of the chronic inflammation that drives autoimmunity, we can stop the progress and even allow the body to heal.

Autoimmune conditions like RA are a result of chronic inflammation. Even in cases of genetic predisposition, there need to be environmental triggers that cause activation of disease. A favorite saying in Functional Medicine is that “genetics may load the gun, but environment pulls the trigger.” The beauty is that it is never too late to turn it around. Of course, it would be ideal if upon diagnosis, patients were told that they could take an effective approach to heal. It is my deepest hope that one day this will be the case. For now, I will keep singing it from the rooftops!

While there are a host of potential triggers, and often more than one for each of us, there are steps that can be taken by all to begin the healing journey. One of the most common contributors to chronic inflammation is food. It can be incredibly effective to identify inflammatory foods and food sensitivities as an initial step to begin to improve symptoms. There is a significant link between leaky gut and autoimmunity. I became an AIP certified coach in order to best support clients in the process of identifying their food triggers and create a healing environment for their immune systems.

Because inflammation is cumulative, it is essential to address all of the lifestyle areas that can contribute. Stress management is essential, as chronic stress is significantly inflammatory. It is not uncommon for autoimmune symptoms to appear after significant stress is experienced, or for a flare of symptoms to occur with increased stress. Because we all live with a degree of chronic stress, balancing that out with a daily management routine is necessary.

High quality sleep, and enough of it, is also extremely important for healing. Our bodies are designed to repair and detoxify during sleep. Many people with RA have disrupted sleep due to pain. Often the quality is such that we are not getting enough of the restorative phases of sleep we need. For more years than I care to remember, I woke up feeling exhausted, no matter how many hours of sleep I got. Waking up feeling rested is a great indicator that your sleep is on track.

Toxins are another common underlying cause of RA and autoimmunity. We are exposed to toxins everywhere now. Our air, water, and food supplies are loaded with toxins. While the body is designed to clear toxins, the sheer amount of exposure can overwhelm the system. Some of us are genetically predisposed to have less than optimal abilities to detox. The first step we all can take is to limit our exposure to everyday toxins and reduce our overall toxic load. This can take some time and effort but can be very effective in supporting the body’s ability to heal.

It may sound like a lot of work to make the changes to address the issues mentioned above, but the rewards are exponential. Our bodies can heal given the support they need. I have completely reversed my symptoms after spending ten years in decline. You, too, can start to turn your health around by taking action today.

“I got to a point in my life where I was sick and tired, literally. I was overweight, out of shape and eating exceptionally poorly. I knew I had to make a change. I tried making those changes on my own but I just couldn’t get healthier. Eventually, I was introduced to Julie Michelson … and my life changed. With Julie’s help I’ve taken back control of my life. She has an incredibly caring and supportive approach that was perfect for me. Her holistic approach helped me physically, mentally and emotionally become a better version of myself. If you are battling weight-loss, depression and generally poor health, I wholeheartedly endorse Julie as the change agent to make you a healthier and happier person.” – Jason K.

“I have enjoyed working with Julie and look forward to what’s in the future. She helped me to prepare for heart surgery – changing my diet and attitude – to get me to a healthier place. I love her gentle spirit and how she balances coaching and compassion. She knows when to push and when to give grace. She’s also fun and can make me laugh even when I don’t want to.” – Stephanie

“I would like to say that my experience with Julie Michelson and The Whole 30 program has been life changing. A year ago I was way overweight with bad eating habits, napping a lot and intestinal issues. Nine months later I’m 50+ pounds down, no more prescription med’s and lots of energy with clear thinking. And maintaining! Julie’s coaching helped me understand my body’s relationship with food … she kept me accountable and encouraged me to my goal. She answered my questions during our meetings with great advice. Thanks Julie!” – Gary

“I completed a round of whole30 with Julie’s guidance earlier this year as a means to rule out any food sensitivities. Not only did I complete this round, but I also came away with a new outlook on food and overall health, much in thanks to Julie! Throughout the journey Julie was right by my side, and always encouraged me to keep going when I was ready to throw in the towel. She continually pushed me to set my own goals, and always asked how she could help me achieve these goals. Julie was (and still is) an excellent resource, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their health!” – Ashley

“I woke up this morning and was getting ready, doing my morning routine and thought, look at this person. How much growth I have seen in a year. This person with all her conscious decisions, putting collagen and turmeric in her coffee, making a healthy breakfast, sporting her natural hair and feeling comfortable in her natural state. Thank you for coming into my life and teaching me so much. xoxo” – Brittany
