Do you know what's in your mattress?

The old saying "knowledge is power" is one of my favorites.

It is my mission in life to help you take your power back to improve your health, and the first step is always assessing where you are right now.

You may have heard me talk about creating the optimal environment to improve sleep quality, and about creating the routines that support consistent, healing, sleep.

But... have you thought about what is in your mattress?

We spend roughly one third of our lives in bed!

Perhaps you have cleaned up your food, cleaned up your personal care products, and cleaned up your household products... have you cleaned up your mattress?

Most conventional mattresses are loaded with toxic chemicals like flame retardants, formaldehyde, and benzene; as well as polyurethane foam, which is a petroleum based product that off gasses to emit VOCs.

All of the aforementioned are clinically proven to be significant dangers to long term health.

Another consideration in conventional mattresses is the use of metal coils.

We can find evidence to support that they may increase EMF exposure... although I have seen research on both sides of that argument.

If you are like me, you will want to err on the side of caution when the time comes to replace your mattress.

There are many up-leveled choices available now that use clean components like organic latex, organic wool (as a flame retardant), and organic cotton.

I realize that a mattress is a significant investment and I am not suggesting that you run out and get a new one! Simply that you take stock and learn what you are sleeping on so that you can make an informed choice when it is time to replace it.

Take Action

You guessed it! Step one this week is to determine what is in your mattress. How old is it? Is it covered in flame retardant? Is it made of toxic foam? Is it supporting your health, or hurting it?If you are coming close to time to replace your mattress, start doing your research. What are your priorities and preferences?
