Sitting is the new smoking

You may have heard by now that sitting is the new smoking.

Really?

YES!!!

Extended periods of sitting increase your risk of obesity, back and neck pain, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep vein thrombosis, Alzheimer's, dementia, anxiety, depression, and early mortality.

And exercise doesn't offset extended sitting.

If you work out every morning and then sit at your desk all day, you haven't mitigated the risks of sitting.

Get up and MOVE!

Every 20-30 minutes, stand up and move around.

If you have access to a stand desk, switching from sitting to standing throughout the day is ideal!

But it is important to move around a bit, even when using a stand desk.

I have a fun, foam mat at my stand dest that allows me to be moving and stretching (which I am doing right now) while working.

If you plan to use a stand desk and haven't done so before, ease into it.  Don't go from all sitting to all standing, or your body may express unhappiness.

Even if a standing desk is not an option, simply getting up and moving around on the half hour will suffice.

Not only will it support your health, your productivity and creativity will benefit , and your mood may improve as well.

Many of my clients will take a planned walk during phone calls or conferences, or take a walk at lunchtime.

You can set an alarm or reminder for every 20-30 minutes.

Parking at the far end of the parking when running errands can increase your steps throughout the day.

Take Action

Step 1: Take stock.  Notice how long you typically sit during the day without getting up.  If you use an exercise tracker, it will tell you.

Step 2: Set reminders for every 20-30 minutes throughout the workday.  Some trackers can be set to remind you if you haven't moved.

Step 3: Get creative!  Consider a stand desk, or way to be moving while you work.
