The Vagus Nerve is the biggest nerve in the body.  It connects the brain with most every organ.  It is a KEY part of your parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system.

There are simple ways to increase vagal tone, which improves your ability to return to the parasympathetic state after stress.  Increasing vagal tone increases resilience, and improved mental and physical health.

If you track your HRV (heart rate variability) it correlates with vagal tone.  High HRV equals high vagal tone.

Likewise, resting heart rate is inversely correlated with vagal tone.  High resting heart rate equals low vagal tone.

The good news is that we can improve vagal tone!

All of the following vagal exercises are totally free and easy to incorporate into your day.
  • Humming
  • Singing
  • Cold Shower
  • Belly Breathing
Doing one, or all, of these exercises daily will get your vagus nerve exercised and improve your ability to get into the healing state.

If you want to learn more about the vagus nerve and it's role in inflammation, check out my podcast interview with Dr. Navaz Habib here.

Take Action

Incorporate one of the above exercises into your daily routine.  If you want to add more, try humming or singing in the shower, and finishing with cold water.  It will give you great impact without taking any additional time in your schedule.
