Have you ever thought that meditation just wasn't your thing? I totally get it.
Myth 1 - Quiet MindI used to believe that to "properly" meditate, my mind had to be completely empty. Whenever thoughts bubbled up, I felt like I was failing. It's a common trap many of us fall into!
I want to share a key insight that totally shifted my perspective. A while back, I learned something game-changing: meditation isn't about silencing your thoughts. It's about noticing when your mind starts to wander and gently guiding it back. It is an exercise...not a state of being. And the magic is in the returning to the meditation.
That's it!
Realizing this was like lifting a weight off my shoulders.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. And here's the good news: the only way you can get meditation wrong is by not doing it.
Myth 2 - Living in a CaveDo you hold the belief that you need to spend hours every day in meditation in order to gain the benefits?
You don't!
Beck to the perspective of meditation as exercise. You wouldn't start with an Ironman! But you would train consistently.
Regular meditation is effective meditation!
Start with a duration that seems doable, and create the habit. Pick a time of day, and stick with it.
The Best Type of MeditationThe most effective kind of meditation is whatever resonates with you or your mood. Often it can be easiest to begin with guided meditation. I started my practice with Vedic meditation, which is a mantra meditation. Silent meditation can also be powerful. Many busy brained people find moving meditation to be their favorite. ANY form of consistent meditation can be life changing!
Meditation can be a great tool for improving sleep, reducing pain and inflammation, improving mood, supporting immune system and increasing feelings of wellbeing. Not bad for a free practice!
Kickstart Your PracticeDon't have a meditation routine yet? No worries.
Why not start with just 5 minutes a day? There's an app I love called Insight Timer. It's free and has a massive library of guided meditations. You can pick by length or type, making it super easy to find one that suits you.
When (not if) your mind wanders during meditation, that's totally normal. Just notice it, and then gently return to your meditation. That's all there is to it!
