There is a growing market for healthier food options.
I have been excited to see high-quality product lines emerging in the food industry. It has made it easier to support my clients in making the lifestyle changes that support their healing.
For example, I haven't made my own mayonnaise in several years because I can now buy mayo made with avocado oil 😃, instead of inflammatory soybean oil 🤮.
However, many food products are marketed in a misleading way. Just because something is labeled to target shoppers looking for healthy options, doesn't mean that it might not contain inflammatory ingredients.
Back to the mayo... when I made my own, I used olive oil. So when the brand I grew up eating came out with an olive oil mayo, I was excited. UNTIL... I read the ingredients. And while it did contain some olive oil, it was also still loaded with canola oil. Ugh!
This is why it is a MUST to read the labels. (You've heard me say that before!) The front of the packaging is truly just marketing and can not (unfortunately) be trusted.
There are grain-free options coming out every month, which is great for those of us who avoid grains. And some of them get a gold star on my list! But most would be best left on the grocery store shelf!
So even if a snack is labeled grain-free... it doesn't mean that it isn't filled with other inflammatory ingredients like cheap oils.
I look forward to more TRULY health-supporting food products hitting the market.
But it is our responsibility to know what we are eating.
As we get more selective and savvy, more and more companies are going to be targeting us with less than optimal food products.
One easy workaround is to truly eat a whole foods diet with very little processed food included. But if you are looking for some replacement options... don't be fooled by the marketing!
Take Action
It is easy to tell you to shop along the perimeter of the store and stick to the produce and meat/fish sections.
But I have mellowed with age 😉 so your action step for this week is to check your pantry and make sure that your "healthy" options are truly supporting your lifestyle!
That's it! Just double-check and make sure you didn't fall for a marketing trick.
