I used to love that everywhere you go during the last month of the year smells of cinnamon and pine trees. Have you noticed that?

It is impossible to get away from. Every store seems to be full of the scents of the holidays.

Did you know that those fragrances are bad for you?

They are loaded with unregulated chemicals that are often toxic.

That's right!  TOXIC!  While there are a variety of chemical used in "fragrance", two of the most common are phthalates and styrene.

Phthalates are known endocrine (hormone) disrupters and impact fertility in both men and women.

They can also contribute to obesity! Phthalates are banned in some countries but only in certain products in the United States.

Styrene is another endocrine disrupter. And it's also a likely carcinogen and toxic to the liver and red blood cells.

These are only two of the many many common toxins used in fragrance (yes...even perfume). And those celebratory scents can wreak havoc on those who are sensitive.

If you are lucky enough not to feel negative effects from exposure to fragrance, I want to be sure you know you are increasing your toxic load when you enjoy products such as scented candles, air fresheners, and anything scented like that.

Not sure if you're sensitive?  There are a variety of reactions for those who are sensitive. Migraines, headaches, irritated eyes or skin, swelling, fatigue... the list goes on and on.

If you experience any of those reactions, consider the possibility that your toxic load is beyond what your body can handle and is a driver of your inflammation.

"But I love candles!"

I get it!  I do too!  As a matter of fact, I used to have bunches of scented candles all over my house.

I have swapped them out with essential oil diffusers, and use only high quality essential oils so I know what I am getting!

So don't let the fragrance overload take you down this holiday season.

Be aware of what you are getting exposed to and take control of your environment at home.

Take Action

Notice how you feel when you have been blasted with holiday fragrance.

If your body takes a hit with exposure, consider swapping anything scented at home for essential oils. That's it!
