Orange🍊 You Getting Variety?

It was spring-like in Colorado for a few days.  So I took advantage, practiced what I preach, and got outside and prepped my garden for spring planting.

Guess what I found?

Carrots! 🥕🥕🥕

I had missed some carrots at last harvest, and nestled snuggly in the soil, still fresh and delicious, were carrots!

My horses were just as excited as I was!

So... it must be time to remind you that it is important to eat the rainbow...REALLY!

And this time, orange foods get the spotlight.

You have heard me stress the importance of the variety because the different colors have concentrations of different phytonutrients.

Orange foods are no exception!

Orange foods contain Beta-Carotene, which can convert to Vitamin A, as well as Bioflavonoids which work together with Vitamin C.

Orange foods help support:
  • the immune system
  • eyes
  • skin
And help prevent cancer and heart disease.

You can see why it is important to include them in your diet.

Many orange foods are also high in sugar, so I encourage you to include them thoughtfully.

I like to focus on including foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash,  and turmeric routinely in my diet.

If I could tolerate night shades, I would also include orange peppers regularly.

The higher sugar orange fruits, I include as a treat and I like to eat them with fat or protein to slow down the sugar spike.

I encourage you to thoughtfully enjoy papayas, apricots, cantaloupe, mangos, and oranges, as well as other higher sugar orange foods.

Take Action

You guessed it!  Pay attention to your meals over the next few days and see if you are including orange foods every day.

If so, pat yourself on the back 👏👏

And if not, make an effort to add nutrient-dense orange foods to your daily menu!

That's it!
