You likely know that your body is made up of 60% water.  But do you pay attention to how much water you take in every day?

When it is hot out, it can feel more natural to drink plenty of fluids, but often in the winter, it takes conscious effort to make sure we are getting enough water in.  And by water, I mean still or sparkling water that is unsweetened, or herbal tea that is caffeine-free.

There are way too many reasons to stay to fully hydrated to list here, but I want to touch on a few.
  • We need to be well hydrated in order to support our detox pathways!
    • Staying hydrated supports our liver and kidneys. We need to be urinating and having bowel movements regularly to properly eliminate toxins.
    • Hydration is essential for sweating, which is the third avenue for detox.
  • Drinking enough water supports our digestive system.
  • Being well hydrated supports our joints.
  • Water is essential for the optimal absorption of vitamins and minerals.
Less than ideal water intake can contribute to many symptoms, including:
  • headaches
  • dry skin
  • constipation
  • muscle cramping
  • fatigue
  • dry mouth and eyes
  • high blood pressure
It is important to note that thirst is not always a good indication of less than optimal hydration.

Hopefully, I have motivated you to pay extra attention to your hydration levels.

Take Action

As always, the first step is to assess where you are.  Take some time over the next few days and pay attention to your water intake.

Also ask yourself, "is my urine clear and my poop regular?"

If you notice that you might want to increase your hydration levels, start by adding an extra glass of water in the mornings.

*It is ideal to drink clean (filtered) water out of glass or stainless and avoid tap water and plastics when possible.

That's it!  Simple 😊
